Brian MurphySolitary Moments

Brian Murphy arrived in the Virgin Islands after graduating from the Savannah College of Art and Design. Introduced to a deep appreciation for the sea by his wife’s family, who managed Independent Boat Yard, he quickly embraced island life.

For 19 years, Murphy and his collectors have eagerly anticipated his annual exhibitions at Mango Tango. His artwork often features the historic buildings of downtown, the island’s scenic beaches, and captivating still-life compositions. A few years ago, he relocated to Asheville but enjoys the best of both worlds—calling Asheville home while frequently visiting family in St. Thomas.

Murphy’s artistic style is rooted in impressionism. This intimate exhibition, Solitary Moments, reflects his signature approach. Though he had planned to create more pieces, Hurricane Helene disrupted his neighborhood. We at the gallery believe, however, that quality matters more than quantity.

Each of Murphy’s paintings bursts with vibrant, unblended colors and energetic brushstrokes. His luminous canvases capture light in a way that brings his subjects to life. True to its name, every piece in Solitary Moments preserves a fleeting, intimate scene.
