PRIDE goes back to the early 70’s. In June of 1969, the Stonewall Riots began in New York City when the police raided a gay nightclub in Greenwich Village. This sparked a 6 day standoff of protests and became the start of the gay rights movement. In 1999 and 2000, President Bill Clinton declared June, LGBTQ month and so thereafter, did Barack Obama, Donald Trump, and Joe Biden. This month commemorates the Stonewall Riots and many celebrations are held.
