Caribbean Islands 2000

In the late 90’s I (Jane Coombs, owner) had business unrelated to art that brought me to Cuba. When I would finish those business endeavors I would explore the rich art scene which led me to meet art restoration virtuoso and artist Iris Leyva. She was amazed to learn that at that time Mango Tango sold more maps than fine art. She mentioned that she could create a map. The next month I brought her watercolor paper and paints. Each evening I would watch her create this map — no computer involved.

She aged the paper with wet teabags. She lightly penciled in the islands and then water colored them. She used a ruler to draw lines. As a restorer of manuscripts, calligraphy is her forte. As I only was able to bring one piece of watercolor paper through customs, I watched nervously when she dipped the pen in the inkwell for the lettering. When I returned to the Virgin Islands a week later, I sent it to a printer and have been selling the map ever since.
